CPSO organizes self-defense workshops for women

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) – Quite often many women report feeling nervous when walking alone at night or in a similar situation. Some ask, “Would I be able to retaliate if I was attacked?” The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office helps women answer this question through a series of self-defense workshops.

“I think every woman should come to this class,” said participant Hayley Richards. “Why? Because you can hear and be inspired by other people’s stories.

“Ultimately, women will rule the world; but we just have to make sure we have the right defenses to do it, ”said participant Camren Green.

This is the purpose of the seminar. It enabled self-defense instructors to speak one-on-one with women of all ages to address their concerns while teaching them the techniques necessary to ward off a potential attack.

“I’m probably the oldest in the class,” said Aavonne Lambert. “I am 76 years old. I need a refresher course and today, knowledge is power. Maybe I can apply some of this stuff when I hit the stores.

“You know how to fight, you know how to do this and that; but what do you do right now, ”Richards asked. “What if they grab you from behind?” “

The class was designed for ages 16 and up, so these women say they are bringing their skills from the classroom to the real world and sharing them with their children.

“I don’t know how much strength I have,” said participant Droiorn. “I don’t know how much strength I have. If someone is behind me, I don’t know the right way to approach this situation; So this is what I hope to learn today: how to deal with the situation and whether my own abilities might be of use to me so that I can teach others that way as well. “

“Go home and have these conversations with sisters, mothers, grandmothers – don’t be a willing victim,” says Calcasieu Parish Deputy Sheriff Chief Stitch Guillory. “Be prepared to fight for your life if you are attacked! “
