Delhi: Man beaten to death by factory worker, others in alleged robbery attempt

Delhi police on Sunday arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly beating another to death in the Northern District during an attempted robbery, officials said on Monday. Police said the victim, Izhar, 19, was grabbed and beaten by the accused, Gyani, and others on Saturday morning.

According to officials, they received information at Sarai Rohilla post about a body lying on a street in Shahzada Bagh. When the police arrived on the scene, they discovered injuries on the body. They also discovered that the victim’s hair had been cut and scattered a few feet away. The scene was then examined by a crime squad and the body was taken to Sabzi Mandi morgue.

A case has been registered under sections 302 (murder), 201 (disappearance of evidence) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the officials added.

Police said that upon reviewing CCTV footage they found the victim entering the factory around 4 a.m. and stealing a mobile phone. He was then grabbed and beaten by the accused, and taken outside where a mob joined. The victim was then beaten to death with fists, plastic pipes and belts.

Sagar Singh Kalsi, DCP (North), said: “The accused was arrested by the police on Saturday. He admitted to beating the victim to death with other people and cutting his hair with a pair of scissors, which were then hidden in the factory.

Police said they were conducting a search for the remaining defendants. They also said that based on the accused’s statement regarding the theft, an FIR was also registered under IPC Sections 380 (theft from dwelling, etc.), 457 (night burglary for committing an offence) and 411 (dishonest receipt of stolen goods).
