Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, hosted a workshop Friday to help community partners learn how to get federal community project funding (CPF).

Friday, Garcia organized a workshop City hall provide information to non-profit organizations and local government entities on funding community projects.

“It benefits the community to a very large extent,” said Noah Sadlier, director of communications for Garcia. “Rep. Garcia is very passionate about making sure we do our due diligence so he can make sure we get as much funding as possible for the district.”

There are several steps to obtaining community project funding, according to Garcia’s office.

First, the nonprofit or government community entity should develop a plan for how it would use the funding.

Then they would contact Garcia’s office to start the application process.

Garcia’s office would help refine the plan to give it the best chance of being approved.

Finally, the organization or government entity would submit the plan and grant application, according to officials.

Funding for community projects comes from the federal government. It is channeled specifically to projects that help the community as a whole, officials said.

Local non-profit organizations and government officials can apply for community project funding.

Past projects approved for funding have included those that have benefited local schools and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeleswhich is the closest children’s hospital to Santa Clarita.

It’s not typical for reps to hold workshops like the one hosted by Garcia, according to Sadlier.

Through the event, Garcia hoped to explain the process of receiving community project funding so that local entities can act quickly when the application period opens.

“We’re keeping this upfront because it’s a very beneficial program for our community and our district, but it’s a unique process and not everyone knows how to do it off the cuff,” said Sadlier.
