Le Papillon Tattoo Studio partners with Cocktail Connoisseur

Tattoos hold a certain fascination in popular culture. The art form has a rich history that has morphed into something between a contemporary subculture and the mainstream.

Example: molecular mixologists behind Cocktail Connoisseur has teamed up with Le Papillon Tattoo Studio for an evening of cocktails and tattoos in the historic Millennium Building in gastown.

Cocktail Connoisseur, led by Kam tabarrae and John lavenderis a “ghost” bar known for its cool, somewhat underground events that combine elaborate drinks with creative pursuits like fashion, art, and cabaret.

The pair have already linked up with a fashion designer and NFT artist Kiarash Tariki, RnB the singer Sofia Evangelina, and the goh Ballet to create immersive experiences in the same building as Le Papillon and the two projects were looking for an opportunity to collaborate.

This latter experience seemed like the most natural progression for both art forms. Tattoos and Cocktails will be hosted by tattoo artist and Papillon founder Daniel Snoekswho says the studio is more like a lifestyle brand as it introduces tattoo culture to the world.

He honors the history of tattoos and his own personal history with the name. Le Papillon originated from the 1973 French film Butterfly who inspired Snoeks‘ father to get butterfly tattoos, the only tattoos he had Snoeks was growing. He studied the history of butterfly tattoos and traced them to the world of French prisons (in the film, Papillon was a French criminal, based on a true story). This track Snoeks‘ to his interest in tattooing.

The event will feature four tattoo artists with different styles tattooing large-scale pieces live with clients they have worked with for a long time, accompanied by four cocktails inspired by the history and design of the work.

Louis Tibo (@dirtyartmaker) is an old school mixed with a new school artist including an expert in saturated color and smooth black and gray packaging, Shae Chari (@seekshaed) is an illustrative tattoo artist who enjoys designing pieces inspired by psychedelic and magical nature, Marine (@moss.meadows) is a fine black and gray line artist who does a lot of flowers and winged beasts, and Gale (@wraith________) specializes in highly stylized dark and curvy vampiric illustrations.

To start, guests will be greeted with a welcome drink and a short documentary on Le Papillon directed by local filmmaker Warwick Hughes. Then each artist will have a station where they complete their live tattoo session and people can watch and mingle as they go. DJEvo jams.

There are two sessions for this event at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and there will be an after party in the Millennium Building penthouse at 11 p.m. after the second session.
