ELKHART COUNTY, Indiana – A Michiana Gym resists bullying. Steve’s Gym/Elkhart Martial Arts is hosting an anti-bullying workshop on Saturday, April 2, which aims to address what some are calling a growing bullying problem in the community.
Over the past few weeks there have been several incidents of bullying being reported at different schools in Elkhart and to help teach children how to stand up for themselves, Steve’s Gym is hosting an anti-bullying workshop for children aged five and up.
“We’re going to show them what to do when they’re pushed, we’re going to show them a nice stance, having their hands up, no fists like their fights. We’re going to show them from a basic grip how to get out said Steve’s Gym manager and instructor Brittany Mosier.
Mosier said they will teach students techniques for de-escalation and inner trust. She said many of her students who attend the martial arts gym are there because they themselves have been bullied. And when 12-year-old Rio Allred, a student at North Side Middle, took her own life due to severe bullying, the staff at Steve’s Gym wanted to help ensure it wouldn’t happen again.
Their anti-bullying workshop plans to teach students how to better protect themselves inside and outside the classroom.
“They just learn to be confident, can completely stop bullying, be able to stand up for themselves, be able to tell someone to stop, stand up for themselves, it’s so important, I mean it’s It’s one of the most important things kids can learn,” said Mosier.
More than 50 students have already registered for the anti-bullying workshop. And due to high demand, there is a waiting list. If you want to register, you can go here.
The gymnasium plans to hold more workshops like this in the future. For more information and to stay up to date on go Steve’s Gym / Elkhart Martial Arts Facebook page.
