Construction of a 17-story student housing tower at the corner of Assembly and Washington streets in downtown Columbia is underway.

CRG, the Chicago-based real estate development and investment arm of Clayco, and private student housing developer and operator Landmark Properties inaugurated the Standard in Columbia on Tuesday. The 678-bed tower will feature 247 fully furnished units, a rooftop pool, fitness and wellness center, and other amenities when completed in fall 2023.

“After many years of competing with Landmark for the best sites in the best college towns, it was fun to be able to put together a synergistic partnership that brings our two teams together to create a signature property for Columbia students,” JJ Smith, managing partner of CRG, said in a press release. “The Standard will create an unparalleled experience for students in downtown Columbia. “

Apartments range from studios to five-bedroom units in the 443,000 square foot building. The pre-rental will begin this fall, according to the press release.

“We are thrilled to partner with CRG to provide this premier student life experience for residents of Columbia,” said Wes Rogers, President and CEO of Landmark Properties. “There is a strong demand for quality living options in the downtown submarket, and this project will provide unparalleled amenities to serve students at the University of South Carolina. ”

Citizens Bank funded the construction, while CRG’s integrated partner, Lamar Johnson Collaborative, designed the project. Parent company Clayco will serve as the general contractor.

“This project demonstrates the strength of our vertically integrated platform,” said Bethany Crispin, senior vice president and head of the residential business unit at Clayco. “With the JJ team and our LJC partners, we are able to respond quickly to develop, design and build premier multi-family and student housing projects across the country. We are excited to deliver this building to the Columbia community, and will continue to identify other opportunities here.

CRG’s residential group has projects in 40 states and seven countries, supplying and developing more than $ 6 billion in residential communities and 40,000 units in the multi-family, co-living, senior and student housing markets.
