Silkroad and NEC Announce Global Musicians Workshop 2022


Today, Silkroad and the New England Conservatory (NEC) announced their continued partnership to present the Global Musician Workshop (GMW) from August 8-12. Led by cellist Mike Block and co-directed by pipa player Wu Man, who received an honorary doctorate of music from the NEC last year, the program features star faculty artists including members of the award-winning Silkroad Ensemble. a Grammy Award, and guests and students who represent a variety of musical cultures and languages. For five days, participants will take part in teacher-led workshops, jam sessions, themed electives, and more. They will also share the legendary stage of NEC Jordan Hall for a multi-night performance festival, August 10-12, to showcase their learnings and musical creation.

“This will be our first in-person GMW community reunion since the pandemic and we are excited to collaborate again, learning music from faculty and attendees over five intense days of rehearsals, jamming and workshops,” said Mike, Director of GMW. GMW is a musician training program inspired by the principle of cultural collaboration guiding the Silkroad Ensemble. Open to anyone over the age of 18, participants include professional and amateur artists, students, teachers and teaching artists from a plethora of musical backgrounds and styles. Through the inclusion of classical, folk, jazz and traditional genres from around the world, they learn, share and integrate each other’s traditions while expanding their own art. Hundreds of musicians, representing nearly 40 different countries and more than 40 types of instruments, have participated in GMW since its inception in 2015.

This year, and for the first time ever, 60 applicants were selected from a field of 158 to attend GMW, with tuition fully supported by Silkroad (a $1,000 value per student). Applicants to the 2022 program represented 33 countries and 42 different instruments.
