Stephen Bell drove his Chevrolet COPO Camaro to the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown winner’s circle from third qualifying position at the Dodge // SRT NHRA Mile-High Nationals in front of a near-record crowd. Bell took out Doug Hamp, Leonard Lottig, Arthur Kohn and finally Leah Pruett for the win.
“I now feel as good as I have ever been in my life,” said Bell, after taking the victory. “It was a great day and we worked really hard. [Crew chiefs] Greg and Aaron Stanfield made great tuning decisions all day and I did a good job behind the wheel of the car.
Throughout the day, Bell kept his focus and took each turn one by one. The final run was a race for the ages as Bell and Pruett left the start line almost simultaneously with Bell getting the lesser of reaction times, 0.051 to 0.053, and at the finish line it was Bell who poked his Camaro in front of Pruett’s Dodge Drag Pak. The last elapsed times have lit the dashboard respectively from 8.259 to 8.265 seconds.
“Things turned out our way today. It was a magical day, ”said Bell. “We had a very fast car for a couple of races and we just needed a little bit of luck in the race. We will be in Topeka, Kansas in August and then to US nationals. We’re really excited and the car is running well. “
With the win, Bell moved from fourteenth in the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown points standings to fifth place just seven points off third. It will also get the premium tag as the series moves to Heartland Park Topeka for the upcoming Factory Stock Showdown event.
In the quarterfinals, Arthur Kohn knocked out No.2 qualifier and Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown bounty pilot David Barton. With $ 1,000 at stake, Kohn took the win and the bonus with an almost perfect reaction time of 0.015 and an elapsed time of 8.370 seconds at 163.69 mph.
With four races on the books for the 2021 Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown, attention will turn to the Midwest for the NHRA Menards Nationals in Topeka, Kansas, August 13-15. Race five of the eight-race special series will feature an ongoing battle between the Chevrolet COPO Camaro, Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and Dodge Mopar Challenger Drag Pak and a group of tough contenders.
