Suspect in Gurnee Portillo robbery – Cardinal News

Hoffman Estates police responded at around 4:39 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2022 to an armed robbery at Burlington Coat Factory 4700 Hoffman Boulevard Hoffman Estates, IL. Police received a report that an offender attempted to rob the Burlington Coat Factory in Hoffman Estates.

The offender is initially believed to be the “at-large” suspect who allegedly stole a white Ford Transit van in Round Lake Beach on Monday, October 24, 2022 and then stole the Portillos from Gurnee Mills.

The suspect was identified Monday by the Grayslake Police Department as 43-year-old Eric J. Gatlin.

Suspect Wednesday night is male/black mustache, beard, dressed in all black clothing and armed with a pistol.

The suspect was last seen heading east across the parking lot.

The crime allegedly took place at 4:39 p.m.

The Grayslake Police Department, Monday evening Oct. 24, 2022, is seeking information on the whereabouts of a subject who has been involved in multiple incidents in the North Lake and Cook County area over the past few hours, according to Grayslake Police Department. The suspect has been linked to a stolen van taken in Round Lake Beach and an armed robbery in Gurnee. Details of other recent incidents related to the suspect in northern Lake and Cook County have not been released by police.

The wanted suspect is identified as 43-year-old Eric J. Gatlin. He is described as a 5’11”, 230 pound, bald black man with brown eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue Chicago Bears sweatshirt.

Gatlin is suspected of possessing at least one stolen vehicle and of committing an armed robbery. Gatlin is behind an hour-long manhunt in the Grayslake, Hainsville, and Round Lake Beach area.

The manhunt also prompted the activation of several soft lockdowns at area schools…

Meadowview School, 291 Lexington Lane, Grayslake,

Avon Center School, 1617 IL-83, Round Lake Beach,

Grayslake District 127 Schools, and

Lake County Technical Campus.

Soft lockdowns were activated when there was a Gatlin sighting report in the area.

According to the Grayslake Police Department, Gatlin was last seen driving a white Ford van, which was later found to have been stolen from Round Lake Beach Goodwill, located at 2351 N. Route 83. at Round Lake Beach around 12:30 p.m. Gatlin could currently drive a white Ford minivan or a gold sedan, according to the Grayslake Police Department. At 1:30 p.m., the suspect was reportedly seen in the Gurnee area.

Round Lake Beach is approximately 8 miles (or 15 minutes) from Gurnee Mills. The theft of the van may have occurred earlier than the reported approximate time of 12:30 p.m., as a robbery at Gurnee Mills Portillo’s was allegedly committed by the same suspect at 12:29 p.m.

An offender, believed to be Gatlin, committed an armed robbery at the Portillos’ home in Gurnee Mills at approximately 12:29 p.m. on Monday, October 24, 2022.

According to the Gurnee Police Department, on October 24, 2022 at 12:30 p.m. Gurnee Police received a call regarding an armed robbery at Portillo’s restaurant. Within three minutes, a police officer assigned to Gurnee Mills and other officers arrived on the scene at Gurnee Mills Portillo’s, but the assailant was gone. The victim of the robbery alleged that a black driver pulled into the drive-thru lane, showed a handgun and took his money before leaving the area. No one was injured during the interaction.

Officers immediately identified the armed robbery suspect’s vehicle as the white Ford van stolen from Round Lake Beach. According to the Gurnee Police Department, a person of interest has been identified as Eric Gatlin, 43, of Grayslake. Gatlin has active warrants out of Lake County, IL. He is described as 5’11, 230 pounds, and is considered armed and dangerous.

The theft case remains under investigation by Gurnee Police.

An earlier police communication report stated that the offender took $1,000 in cash during the robbery and then fled through the back entrance of the restaurant (possibly meaning the back alley entrance). The attacker then drove off in a white Ford van towards Stearns School Road, according to the previous report.

The Grayslake Police Department filed charges against Eric Gatlin today, Monday, October 24, 2022. The charges include…

usually armed criminal (2 counts),

Possession of a stolen firearm,

Felon possessing a weapon, and

Felon possessing a front weapon

As of 8:20 p.m., no charges have been filed for robbery in the Lake County Circuit Court system.

Gatlin has an active protection order and a history of violating protection and home battery orders.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact the Grayslake Police Department at 847-223-2341.

Citizens are also advised not to approach the suspect.
